PANS/PANDAS Course

CE Hours 6

About this course

This FOUR part seminar demystifies the often misunderstood and misdiagnosed childhood disorders, Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS), Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS) and Autoimmune Encephalitis (AE), enhancing understanding, diagnostic, and clinical skills. Participants will learn how to diagnose the mental health impacts of PANS/PANDAS/AE and discover an array of effective treatment options for these conditions. The rising prevalence of PANS/PANDAS/AE will be discussed, in addition to their potential links to infectious diseases and toxins, and their often misunderstood neuropsychiatric presentations. The importance of accurate diagnosis and effective professional response strategies will be emphasized.

Part One: What is PANS & PANDAS and How is it Diagnosed?

Overview of Objectives: To provide participants with the most up to date information regarding current understanding and diagnosis of Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome, Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal Infections and Autoimmune Encephalitis.

Part Two: Treatment Options for PANS/PANDAS/AE

Overview of Objectives: To provide participants with the most up to date information regarding current treatment options, including alternative therapies for Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome, Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal Infections and Autoimmune Encephalitis.

Part Three: Behavioral Therapy and Psychotherapy for PANS/PANDAS/AE Clients

Overview of Objectives: To assist participants in treating the psychiatric and behavioral symptoms to decrease suffering and improve adherence to therapeutic intervention. Therapeutic interventions tailored to each child's presentation can provide symptom improvement and improve functioning during both the acute and chronic stages of illness.

Part Four: Managing Flares and Rages: Parenting and Family Support

Overview of Objectives: To teach participants effective parenting and family strategies, to better handle the intense rage behavior associated with PANS/PANDAS/AE flares and maintain safety.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the 3 primary PANS/PANDAS/AE symptoms: sudden onset, obsessive/compulsive behaviors, ARFID.
  • Identify causes of PANS/PANDAS/AE.
  • Discriminate when to engage a medical provider (i.e. genetic OCD vs PANS OCD).
  • Describe current medical treatments, including immunotherapy, antibiotics, IVIG, plasmapheresis and anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • Identify the 5-Pronged approach to PANS/PANDAS/AE treatment.
  • Explain why treatment failure is common in PANS/PANDAS/AE.
  • Assess a comorbid autism diagnosis and complications arising therefrom.
  • Evaluate more effective ways to respond to flares/outbursts/violent behaviors.
